Year 6 Curriculum

Autumn 1 - On the Move

We all live in the United Kingdom, but do we really know much about it? What will Great Britain look like in the future?  As geographers we will be using maps and atlases to name and locate counties and cities in the UK.

We will be investigating the people who live in the UK and exploring how a range of beliefs and cultures come together to make a community.  We will learn about why people want to move to and from the UK and the changes and trends that this movement creates. As writers we will be analysing and enjoying a range of biographies by Great British people. We will be writing a biography about our chosen Great Briton.

Autumn 2 - Black and British

Our ‘Black and British’ topic allows us to consolidate our understanding of the history we have learned so far at Downs as well as other time periods such as post World War Two Britain.

Through this study, we will learn about the history of black Britons, which stretches back millennia. We will consider issues surrounding race and changing attitudes and experiences over time.

We will discuss key concepts including migration; exploration; empire; the transatlantic trade of enslaved people and discrimination. We will also look at the lives and positive contributions of individual people of colour throughout British history and celebrate how the U.K. has benefitted from this.

Spring 1 - Power of the Planet

What is a natural disaster? Why do they happen?

We will be learning about volcanoes and where they are around the world. We will be studying the 1980 eruption of Mt. St Helens in close detail. We will be writing our own case studies of a natural disaster and comparing the effects of these in the developing and developed worlds.

Spring 2 - Evolution Revolution

How do we know about animals from the past? How have animals evolved from their dinosaur ancestors?

As scientists we will explore the origins of the earth and learn how life has evolved from simple organisms to complex humans. We will learn how archaeologists use fossils to deepen their understanding of the past.

Summer - Ancient Maya

As historians we will be going on a journey to Ancient Maya.  Looking at the culture and achievements of the Maya people.  This unit will end with you creating a travel brochure to encourage people from Brighton today to go back in time to 1,100 BC! As artists we will be learning about Maya masks, why they were important and how they were made. We will then design and make our own 3D masks using a variety of techniques.
